Science and Ag Hill: Cedar Street Building C, University of Georgia

Athens - Clarke County

The University of Georgia’s former Chemistry Building was constructed in 1960 as part of a larger Science Center development on the campus. The design represents the Space-Race-era vision for academic and scientific architecture. Through a $47 million rehabilitation the building was transformed into a state-of-the-art facility for interdisciplinary scientific research. Roofing and mechanical systems were replaced, original windows were restored or replaced with energy-efficient units, and brick veneer was repaired. Many efforts were taken to improve air quality and energy efficiency of the building while retaining historic character. This project demonstrates how aging research buildings can be sustainably modernized for today’s needs while preserving architectural integrity, even while meeting strict scientific standards. As the first phase in UGA’s long-term Science and Ag Hill revitalization plan, it sets a precedent for responsible reuse of historic academic infrastructure.

Excellence in Sustainable Rehabilitation Awards recognize excellent rehabilitation projects that also incorporate appropriate conservation and sustainable treatments that lessen a building’s environmental impact while preserving significant features that convey its historic significance.
