Neel House

Designed in 1910 by noted architect Neel Reid, the Neel House is a Tudor Revival gem in Macon’s Historic District. Built for Reid’s family friend Joseph Neel, it remained a residence until 1957, later serving as an event space before being purchased in 2023 by its current owners. The home had suffered from structural and water damage, but the owners—both Georgia Tech engineers—led a meticulous year-long restoration. Major work included stabilizing the foundation with 20+ piers, repairing termite-damaged floors, and restoring Reid-designed historic features and furniture. Modern touches improve efficiency while preserving the home’s historic integrity. The project restores this architectural treasure to its original residential use, strengthening the character of College Street and reversing the trend of commercial conversions in the neighborhood.
Excellence in Rehabilitation Awards recognize projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations, or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.
