Henderson-Orr House

Newnan - Coweta County

The Henderson-Orr House is an 1828 early classical revival home designed by architect Collin Rogers. Listed on the National Register for Historic Places, the structure still possesses its original ionic capitals, pedimented portico, fanlights, trim, and mantels. The property also holds cultural significance for the community as a former site of the famed Powers Crossroads Country Fair. Unfortunately, the house had been allowed to deteriorate significantly; termites had destroyed the front walls and sills of the first floor, the portico columns were rotted and the pediment and balcony were near collapse. Owners Bob and Georgia Shapiro, painstakingly invested time, talent and resources to save the structure. Using local craftsmen, everything was meticulously restored, using HABS documentation where needed. Original interior floors were uncovered, the roof was repaired and rebuilt with standing seam, and the enclosed south side porch was reconstructed in an appropriate style. This project has preserved one of Georgia’s architectural treasures and rekindled the legacy of a site beloved by generations.

Excellence in Rehabilitation Awards recognize projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations, or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.
