Doyle House

Savannah - Chatham County

The Doyle House in Savannah’s Streetcar Historic District has been thoughtfully restored after many years as a student rental. Originally built for Irish immigrant Maria A. Doyle and her three children, the family lived in the house until the 1960s. Utilizing historic tax credits, the recent rehabilitation project worked to restore the property to its original character, after suffering insensitive alterations such as vinyl siding and dropped ceilings. Work included restoring original siding, windows, grand pocket doors, and a grand floor-to-ceiling opening. Sensitive updates introduced modern amenities while preserving the original side-hall floorplan. Now under long-term lease as a single-family residence, the Doyle House serves as a model for reinvestment in Savannah’s historic neighborhoods.

Excellence in Rehabilitation Awards recognize projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations, or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.
