Hodgson Hall, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School

Rabun Gap - Rabun County

Built in 1927, Hodgson Hall is the original building of the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School campus. As the building nears its 100th anniversary, the school chose to preserve and transform this historic structure into a 21st-century learning environment, ensuring its relevance for the next century. With a modest budget, the project prioritized sustainable, climate-conscious upgrades, including improved moisture control, strategic building pressurization, and a high-efficiency mechanical system supported by a Southface Institute GoodUse grant. The renovation preserved the building’s iconic Neoclassical design and added universal access and vibrant outdoor student spaces. Hodgson Hall now supports modern learning while maintaining its architectural integrity, exemplifying how historic preservation and sustainability can go hand in hand to serve both community and climate.

Excellence in Sustainable Rehabilitation Awards recognize excellent rehabilitation projects that also incorporate appropriate conservation and sustainable treatments that lessen a building’s environmental impact while preserving significant features that convey its historic significance.
