Fair Building

Hawkinsville - Pulaski County

A contributing building in the local historic district, the Fair Building’s recent rehabilitation into apartments peeled back layers of alteration to reveal its historic character. Exterior work involved restoring windows to match historic photos and replacing the storefront with a historically appropriate design. On the interior, fire damage from the 1970s actually assisted in uncovering key architectural details. Original wood floors, coffered ceilings, doors, and transoms were meticulously restored. Modern interventions for the apartments included kitchens, bathrooms, and new stairs, all sensitively integrated. Owner Ken Clark spearheaded the project, using state and federal historic tax credits to reinvest in his community, helping to spur revival in this Middle Georgia town.

Excellence in Rehabilitation Awards recognize projects that make compatible use of a building through repair, alterations, or additions while preserving features of the property that convey its historic value.
